Current Project: Camp Improvements

Our current focus here at Pico is completing various details and maintenance issues around camp.  This year work teams finished a variety of construction, landscaping, and furniture projects.   Our biggest project of the year was remodeling our kitchen.  We knocked out a wall and doubled the size of the kitchen, put in new cabinets, new counters, and several new appliances.  To provide more meeting space during camps, we constructed a gazebo with a beautiful view of town.  We added a new element, the Whale Watch to our low Challenge Course.  Last summer we started integrating kids from our Capernaum ministry into our Outreach Camps.  Capernaum is Young Life's ministry to kids with disabilities.  To accommodate their special needs, we put in a new wheelchair ramp connecting the second and third floors of the lodge.

There are always plenty of maintenance issues to tackle, and this year teams cleaned, sanded, painted, stained, glued, sewed, and taped anything that was not moving!  Teams also helped us keep camp beautiful with various landscaping projects.  One team cut down quite a few trees to improve the views around camp and another cleared out the jungle that we call our frisbee golf course.

Current Major Project: The Gym

Basketball is one of the most popular sports on this island, and a great way for YL leaders to spend quality time with their kids.  Unfortunately our basketball "court" here at Pico is in a sorry state.  It is only a half court and the concrete playing surface is uneven and anything but ideal.  Plus, if you throw the ball too hard it will go over the low wall and you end up chasing it down a BIG hill.  Pico is currently in the process of raising the funds to build a new multi-purpose gym on the property.  If you would like to donate money to help us realize this dream contact Roy Clifford.

Future Projects

As Young Life continues to grow in the Dominican Republic, Pico plans to grow with them.  Future projects include camper cabins, a multi-purpose dining hall & club room, a new pool, and various other additions.  See our Master Plan for more details.  If you would like more information in financially supporting future projects, please contact us!

Past Projects:  The Lodge

While the final use of the upper two levels of the building will be for assigned staff, work crew, and summer staff, it is currently being used to host campers, leaders, assigned staff, work crew, and summer staff.  Needless to say, we are already feeling the need to continue construction as our ministry continues to grow so that we can better serve campers, leaders, and staff alike.  The basement of this building serves as a laundry facility and wood shop, as well as providing storage space for various things, including the equipment for our adventure program. The completion of this building has been a big step for Pico Escondido and we have been enjoying hosting camps of 50 to 150 folks.
